None of us lives alone, because in Christ we are family!

OUR COMMUNITY

Over Eight Decades of Ministry

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church has been a fixture in Knox for more than 80 years. Located on the southern end of the business district of Knox on Hwy 35, Our Redeemer is centrally located in the Knox area, attracting people from all over Starke County, IN and beyond. More than the convenient location, people are drawn to Our Redeemer because it’s a place where people from all walks of life can experience the life changing power of God’s Good News.

Modest Beginnings

From our small beginnings in 1940 renting meeting space in The Seventh Day Adventist Church, to our present location on South Hwy 35, Our Redeemer has ministered to thousands of people over the years. The church was officially organized in March 1940, and in July 1940 became a congregation of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod under Pastor Theodore Meibohm. Our first building was built on north Hwy 35 (the cornerstone was laid on Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day) – which is now American Legion Post #131. We moved into a brand new facility on our current site in late 1972 with Pastor Norman Berning, our second pastor. Our third pastor, Joseph Townsend and his wife Debbie, started our Little Lambs Preschool in early 1985 (Little Lambs Preschool is celebrating 38 years of serving children and their families) Leading Us Forward In 2005 a new addition was added to our building, more than doubling our space for ministry, with Pastor Timothy Miller, our third pastor. That addition contains the Family Life Center, classrooms for our Little Lambs Preschool, which had opened in early 1985, and our Youth ministry room, among many other renovations. Under the service and leadership of these amazing men of God — Theodore Meibohm, Norman Berning, Joseph Townsend, Timothy Miller, and David Putz — Our Redeemer has continued to grow in personality and Christian character. In 1998 Mrs. Diane Cruz was installed as our Director of Christian Education, bringing direction and leadership to our Youth Ministry and outreach initiatives. Pastor Eric Gawura was installed as our pastor in June 2018.

Affiliation

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is a member of Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (a “synod” is a cooperative fellowship of churches). We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the ultimate authority in the church, that salvation is by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and that God’s grace is offered in the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. You can read a full list of the fundamental beliefs of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod on their website.
